Hi, we are pupils from Douglas Academy Music School - a state school near Glasgow that has a specialist music programme. We come from all over Scotland to study here so some of us live in the residence - a boarding house. Due to the coronavirus crisis, we have just been told that the wind players and singers cannot do their music practice in school or in the residence. This means we cannot practice at all during the school week as we live in the residence Sunday evening to Friday. Many of us have come to Douglas hoping to become professional musicians but this is impossible if we can't practice. We are also sitting Higher and Advanced Higher Music and need to practice for these exams too. Music pupils at other schools can practice every night in their own homes. Music schools with boarders in Edinburgh and Aberdeen are letting their pupils practice in their residences because these are their homes during the week. This has not led to any spread of Covid. Our residence and school both have individual practice rooms where we could practice on our own in a Covid safe way. We have given up a lot in order to pursue our dreams of becoming professional musicians, spending every week away from our own homes and families. Please help us persuade Education Scotland, the Scottish Government and the councils which run our school and residence to recognise our unique situation and let us do our music practice in the same way that other pupils are allowed to. If not, all the years of hard work and commitment we have put into music will be wasted. Lots of kids don't want to do their music practice. But we really do. Please help us!
