I am a Scottish Criminology graduate, holding a 1st class Honours degree, and have recently been offered an unconditional place for PhD Research in Criminology and Sociology. However, while English PhD students are eligible for postgraduate funding, at present, the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) do not provide any financial support for PhD students.

While many Universities offer various Scholarships to cover the cost of tuition fees, students continue to struggle to cover the cost of living expenses. PhD research requires roughly 35- 70 hours of studying per week. This makes it impossible for a PhD student to commit to full time work. Like many other students, I plan to carry out part time work during my studies, however, part time income is not enough to fully cover living costs, such as rent, bills and food.

As a result, most students tend to rely on the generosity of their parents in lending them money. However, this option is not available to all students, such as estranged individuals, care experienced students or students from low income families. As I fall into one of these categories myself, I face the same reality as many other individuals, that without some form of financial support I will not be able to carry out my PhD.

This is problematic as it serves as an obstacle for students from disadvantaged backgrounds in being able to achieve their full academic potential and escaping the constraints of poverty.

I understand that perhaps providing tuition fees, grants and loans to PhD students may be more than SAAS can afford. That is why I am only requesting that they at least provide loans to PhD students.
