Iain Nelson started this petition to Scottish Government and

Having depression myself, I found that learning Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) allowed me to understand and empathise with the condition more and the emotions I experienced.

What is CBT? Please click on the underlined text to watch Jo Brand explain in 1 min.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made caring for mental health a top priority - and students are struggling now more than ever to balance health and education. The charity SANE reported a 200% increase in calls to its helpline since lockdown began. Bettering education on CBT etc. will:

  • give students the tools to independently cope better with life's struggles (which is useful considering long NHS wait-lists for counseling etc.)
  • give teachers more capability to understand/support students
  • remove the stigma surrounding seeking support over mental health
  • makes school/home a safer space for teenagers to communicate their needs
  • normalises being open about mental health and dealing with stress - which can impact sleep, growth, and development

This petition aims to urge the Scottish government to require secondary schools to include learning about and practicing CBT (alongside mindfulness and mental health management) as part of the PSE/PSHE curriculum. Additionally, to require teachers to be provided with sufficient training to understand and deliver such content.

CBT is not only useful for coping with depression, anxiety or trauma, and other mental health conditions but also can be used by anyone to handle difficult day-to-day situations such as work stress or strain in relationships - an invaluable skill for students to learn in their adolescence.
