We condemn the Scottish Government for cutting over 140,000 college places since they came to power. We urge them to reverse the cuts.
Because of the cuts, large cities and towns like Glasgow and Cumbernauld have borne the brunt of the cuts. The Governments imposed cuts have had a disproportionate effect on women, women who are trying to find a course to create a better life for themselves and for their family. Many of these courses are part-time; women are more likely to need part-time courses as a route back into employment after having children, a point supported by the Scottish Funding Council. But the Scottish Government has tried to justify the fall in numbers by describing many as "hobby courses". What a disgrace.
EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said, "Further education plays a vital role in our society, providing lifelong learning opportunities for people of all ages and equipping Scotland’s workforce with the types of skills needed to work the country out of the economic downturn. While all sectors of education have seen real-terms decline in their budgets over the past few years, Further Education has been particularly badly hit''
Official statistics show 238,399 students enrolled in colleges in 2013/14 compared to 385,620 in 2001/02, when figures were collated for the first time.
We urge the Scottish Government to halt their cuts agenda on colleges and starting investing in the college sector to create more opportunities for people who want to gain more skills to create a better life for themselves.
