A month ago today, John Mcadam was sentenced to 32 months in prison after pleading guilty to vile domestic abuse that my mother, siblings, and myself were subjected to over an 11 year period. A lot of people were outraged at the length of his sentence given the extent of the abuse and the long-term physical and mental damage that has been caused over the years.

Today, we have been informed that his sentence is being reduced by 50%, meaning he will be released from prison in August next year. I cannot put into words how disheartening it is to have fought for years to have some sort of vindication for the cold-blooded abuse that he subjected us to and to think you have reached some sort of victory, only to have it taken away for no reason. It sends out a horrible message to victims of crimes like these and totally undermines the pain and suffering that abusers inflict on their victims. It's even more ridiculous when you consider that since he began his sentence a month ago, John has also violated an order against him that forbids him from contacting my mother, as he has been calling her from prison.

Cases like these are the very reason that so much abuse goes unreported. Survivors are encouraged to be brave and report abuse, and then they are only made a mockery of by the system. I cannot express how many times in the last 11 years that my family have been completely failed by systems that were put in place to protect us. It's extremely saddening to have the closure we fought for stripped away from us a month later. It's even more saddening to know that domestic abuse is killing people every day and yet, it is still not being taken seriously.

If a petition gets 10,000 signatures then it requires a response from government. It might be a long shot but I refuse to accept the outcome here and I refuse to do nothing whilst so many victims are being undermined and mistreated. Please share this and sign.
