We, the petitioners demand that BCBSA require any of the 38 independently operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield member companies (including, Carefirst, Health Care Service Corporation, Highmark, Premara, The Regence Group, Wellmark, Anthem, Triple-S Management Corp, Empire) that have not already done so, provide complete coverage (including ABA treatment) for Autism Spectrum Disorder in BCBA’s insurance plans.
BCBSA has continually orchestrated a company-wide policy to deny claims and coverage based on the grounds that such treatment is not medically necessary, experimental and/or that the provider and/or facility is not an approved provider, is not a licensed provider, or is an out-of-network provider when the center had a licensed psychologist and/or a Board Certified Behavior Analyst Supervisor.
Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) treatment, is a scientifically valid, medically accepted and mainstream treatment and has been endorsed by a number of state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General, American Academy of Neurology, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychological Association, American Speech-Language Hearing Association, Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Autism Society of America, Autism Speaks, National Institute of Child Health & Human Development among others.
To deny our children coverage is to deny our children the chance to find their voices, connect with society and achieve a successful and productive life. We as parents, grandparents, caregivers will not stand by and allow this..
