The life of our highly vulnerable populations is under threat amid the escalating COVID-19 situation in Australia. The death toll in Victoria has increased to six, after clustered cases of reported cancer patients infected with SARS-COV-2. The Dorothy Henderson Lodge outbreak in Sydney also reminds us of how our elders may succumb to the viral infection.

The tragedies from other nations warns us how we must protect the very vulnerable from the deadly infectious disease. Paris, the Fondation Rothschild elderly people's home, 16 residents have died and 81 fallen ill. Spain, residents of nursing homes abandoned or dead in their beds. These cases only represent the many tragedies that had happened and will continued to happen. We must take preventative steps to stop this from happening in Australia.

One characteristic of COVID19 is its ability to transmit within the community by carriers that could show no symptoms at all. However, professionals in frequent contact with the highly vulnerable population are not geared with the appropriate PPE. Thus, we are lacking preventative measures to stop our elders and the very immunocompromised, such as cancer patients from potentially exposed to SARS-COV-2 in nursing homes and oncology centres. I urge, as a loving citizen of our community and a cancer survivor, that we must gear these professionals in direct contact with the highly vulnerable population with appropriate PPE such as surgical masks to prevent asymptomatic transmission.
