STOP RACISM!

Racism is discrimination against a persons racial or ethnic group. Racism is not ok! Racism hurts individuals, communities and our society at large. The regular experience of racism can lead to people withdrawing from lots of social outings. It can also hurt people’s freedom and dignity. Those who undergo racism can be made to feel they have less freedom, like they're second-class citizens just because of their race.

A study of over 800 Australian school students found that racism had large mental health impacts on young people who experience it, which includes ongoing feelings of sadness, anger, depression and being left out, headaches, increased heart rate, sweating, trembling and muscle tension, a constant fear of being verbally or physically attacked, not wanting to go to school, having little or no trust in anybody apart from family.

In 2015-16, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for 54% of complaints received by the Commission under the Racial Discrimination Act. In 2016 'Barometer" survey showed 37% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experienced racial abuse. In the 'Australia's today survey' it showed 59% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had experienced racial discrimination in the previous 12 months. In America there are BLM protests happening. In some parts of the US, police kill black people at a rate six times higher than they kill white people. In California and New Mexico more that 1 in 100,000 people were killed by police every year. Between 2014 and 2019, police in the United States killed 6557 people. Twenty-five percent of those killed were black. Too many black lives have been lost due to police brutality. This needs to stop!

Racism is NOT OK! We need to make a difference and you can do this by signing this petition to bring awareness to the situation and make a change in our world today.
