Studies have shown that homophobia, discrimination and exclusion has a big impact on young LGBTQI Australians. They are more likely than their peers to develop depression, anxiety, and have suicidal thoughts. They are more likely to commit suicide. It is important in this time more than ever, to reassure young queer children that they are okay, and that there is nothing wrong with who they are, to avoid further mental health stress on them.

The far right Christian conservatives in Australia are fighting for their right to express homophobic beliefs, in particular the right to tell LGBTQIA people in Australia that they are going to hell. This belief, that queer people can choose a different path and change their sexuality or gender identity, has been debunked by science over and over. This belief has harmed the LGBTQI community and should not be allowed to continue unchallenged. Our Prime Minister needs to do more to stamp out inaccurate, harmful beliefs about LGBTQIA Australian's, and the homophobic abuse that has and continues to occur due to people asserting their right to proclaim this belief.

Our Prime Minister should publicly acknowledge that LGBTQI people are born the way they are, to address the rising homophobia that is currently taking Australia by storm. We cannot allow religion to govern Australia's policies and laws. We need to stamp out this false belief before it harms anyone else.

We know that the majority of Australian's are supportive of the LGBTQI community, please support them by demanding that our Prime Minister support us, too. Please help show young queer kids in Australia that most of Australia accepts them by signing your name in support.

Even if this petition never reaches our PM, at least the signatures will be of some comfort to the LGBTQI community in Australia.
