Nigel Bird started this petition to Scott Morrison (Federal Member for Cook) and

Our tobacco excise is way too high and is making normal people struggle.

At a time when the government is spending money supplying injecting rooms for ILLEGAL drugs, us law abiding citizens have to be slogged a huge amount in excise for our legal product.

In the last 10 years my 50gram packet of winfield blue tobacco has increased from $30 to $98 (as of yesterday when the excise increased). My wage has not increased at all in that time making this quite a struggle.

I am not saying get rid of the excise completely but at least cap it at the 2017 rate.

There is currently more punishment for growing your own  tobacco than there is for the ILLEGAL drug marijuana, how wrong is this.

If people can brew their own beer then why can't they grow their own tobacco for personal use.

If the government refuses to lower the excise, I feel that the tobacco companies should start looking after their loyal customers (that is what we are). I would be quite happy to pay $1 a pack more and for this fund to go to a class action lawsuit against the Australian government, this $1 per packet would add up very quickly to be able to afford the best legal counsel. There has to be some way to challenge this, maybe restriction of trade or even entrapment through selling an addictive substance at a cheap rate and then significantly increasing the price to rob everybody of their hard earned cash.

Even if you are a non smoker please support this as it is purely theft by our government. What's next, 80% excise on home brew, vegetables banned from being grown as the government can't get their tax?

Also, constantly increasing the price just increases crime as people can't afford it so the black market flourishes and more break ins will occur.

As long as tobacco remains a legal substance we should not be subject to these absurd prices.

Please sign the petition and help make a difference.
