Mr Morrison,

The Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:

Please allow us to re open the churches.

Since the onset of this pandemic the Australian Catholic community has faithfully and respectfully adhered to all Covid19 rules and regulations, we will continue to do so if allowed to attend church once again. The curve is flattening and if shopping malls and other venues can be reopened while maintaining social distancing rules, then so can the churches.

It is a human right to be able to peacefully, and without hindrance, practice our Faith of which the Mass is an essential service. During these troubling times it is even more important that Catholics be able to attend Mass and the Sacraments.

Australia has always respected the freedom and dignity of the individual and Australians live by the principles of freedom of religion and commitment to the rule of law. They embrace the values of mutual respect, tolerance, fair play, compassion and the pursuit of the public good.

Respecting the freedom and dignity of one fifth of the population means allowing Catholic churches to be reopened. The more than 5.5 million Catholics have shown commitment to the rule of law during this crisis and should be able to exercise freedom of religion. Mutual respect, tolerance, fair play and compassion for those in need demands that churches be granted at least the same status as shopping centres and places of leisure. Lastly, true pursuit of the public good would result in Catholics being able to attend Mass for their spiritual, psychological and temporal wellbeing.

Sincerely,
Concerned citizens.
