NSW is experiencing a Covid19 disaster which threatens to spiral completely out of control. The numbers of sick and dying and those susceptible to long term illness are rising. Medical and paramedical staff and facilities are already under great strain.  There are serious health and economic ramifications for all Australians.

The enemy is formidable but we, as a country, have one of the best track records in the world.  NSW and the other States have all succeeded in overcoming outbreaks at various times.  Vaccines are now available and present a promise for greater protection in the mid-term.

The present crisis in NSW, however, requires urgent action on multiple fronts, a firm commitment to contain the virus and drive transmission downward and innovative strategies to protect the population, especially essential workers. 

We call on the Prime Minister, all Premiers and Chief Ministers to use their combined wisdom, experience and resolve to address this situation.  We ask Premier Berejiklian to take the counsel of all the Premiers, Chief Ministers, Chief Medical Officers and research institutes.  Now is the time to adopt best practice, innovate and immediately pull all stops to contain and suppress the virus, in parallel with improving vaccine coverage.  We, the people are willing.  We know the costs of inaction.
