Hi, we're Charlotte and Kiki and we're in Year 7 and we think that all kids should learn how to communicate through sign language. We think this is fair because all people deserve the right to communicate with others freely and not have a barrier just because of their disability.

It's been made compulsory for children in Victoria to learn a language other than English at school, but it's not compulsory for them to learn sign language. If al kids learnt sign language at school it would be very helpful because, then they would be able to communicate with people that are hard of hearing. Also if a relative became deaf, then they would still be able to communicate easily. Making sign language compulsory also means that the hard of hearing wouldn't have to struggle as much with communication anymore.

By making sign language compulsory we're giving the hard of hearing a voice and a chance to speak up. If you were a deaf child and you moved schools you would probably struggle making friends and communicating with others if they didn't know sign language.

At the moment kids don't learn sign language at school so if they wet out in public and were trying to talk to someone that's deaf it's likely that they wouldn't be able to communicate with them even if they spoke the same language. Imagine not being able to communicate with people that speak the same language as you, and think about how hard that would be.
