Legislation to protect Tenants from eviction and possible bankruptcy while in Lockdown
In NSW you are NOT protected as you may think from eviction should you not be able to fully pay your rent while in lockdown.
Currently our only protection in the recent legislation is that the landlord has to take us to mediation first and the tenant can not be locked out until after August 20th.
What this means (after mediation)
- They can still demand ALL rent in arrears.
- They can use your bond to cover rent you haven't paid.
- You can be locked out.
Now lets say you decide mediation. If you choose this route, YOU PAY $608 to the Small Bsiness Commision. They then try to mediate and "encourage" (their words not mine) the landlord to help. Basically, you pay $608 to lose the only protection you currently have being that they need to take you to mediation before they can take any action.
Please sign this petition asking for the government to reinstate the protections offered to tenants in the first lockdown otherwise so many of us just wont survive.
