Australians, Help Label Palm Oil Correctly Before Orangutans Go Extinct
Why this petition matters
Palm oil is constantly endangering and eliminating the precious lives and habitats of orangutans.
Did you know that palm oil, often disguised as “vegetable oil”, is in at least half of our supermarket products? That is 50% and you may not even know it!
Every single time you consume correctly and incorrectly labelled palm oil, you are contributing to the mass deforestation of palm trees, which are also habitats.
Orangutans as a species are already critically endangered and are very close to extinction. Many countries like Indonesia are major palm oil producers, which if you weren’t aware, is made by destroying rainforest habitats. That is where orangutans live harmlessly. Since 1998, 1,000 orangutans each year contribute to the rapid fall in orangutan populations and to no surprise, the main cause of this declination is the over-deforestation in tropical rainforests, where palm trees grow.
The upside of this, is that we can start rightfully labelling palm oil.
If we do not start realising the problem, the whole orangutan population will most likely disappear from the face of this planet; and if orangutans were to go extinct, several tree species will follow in their footsteps.
You are helping to the death of orangutans and many other animals who live in tropical rainforest regions. Palm oil deforestation continues to happen in more than 27 million hectares of this Earth.
So, from now on, let’s start labelling products that contain palm oil correctly and reduce our palm oil intake as we continue to save orangutans. Sign this petition and be on the right side of history.
