The Government recently increased the Jobseeker Allowance by $50, the highest increase they say in around 40 years, '40 years' seriously this is an injustice.  The present fortnightly allowance (non COVID19 allowance which is ending the end of March 2021) is $565.70, and will increase to $620.80 per fortnight.  I am 57 years of age, I have worked almost all my life, however have found employment difficult in the last 7 or so years, although have had casual employment.  I own my unit, however I still have to pay council & water rates, and all the other standard utility bills, but as a home owner I do not qualify for any extra assistance.  In any case, people find it difficult to find a rental home less than $400 a week.  Maybe the Government need to look at those who share accommodation, or live at home, and those living on their own like myself and introduce further assistance based on living circumstances, or reducing the age limits to access the Aged Pension.  If I cannot find a job I will have to sell my home to afford to live, as I've had to use my savings to assist with my cost of living over the last fews years, when in between jobs (or when my wages couldn't cover my costs).  It is a drain on the tax payer, but given the taxes and assistance paid in other areas by our country, surely our Government can do better.  Put yourself in my shoes, or those who can't find work and THINK ABOUT WHETHER YOU COULD LIVE ON $620 A FORTNIGHT. Poverty and people living on the streets is on the increase, please help put this back on the agenda as people are suffering, especially given our ageing population and that access to the Age Pension has been put back for the majority, as for myself I cannot access the Age Pension until age 67.
