Nicole Cassey started this petition to Scott Morrison (Federal Member for Cook) and

What do we need?
Federal quarantine facilities so we can get our fellow Australians home and prevent continual leaks of COVID-19 from hotel quarantine!

The current hotel quarantine arrangements in Australia no longer work.  The use of aging hotels in central business districts with poor ventilation is no longer acceptable.  I realise that the States agreed to take on quarantine over 12 months ago but the situation has changed significantly in over 12 months and we have learned a great deal.

Please do not mistake my frustration with the current hotel quarantine as an invitation to decrease the number of international arrivals of Australian citizens.  In my opinion, we should have ramped up our efforts to get our Australian citizens home long ago.  To restrict our own citizens from returning home is inhumane and appalling behaviour, it’s simply un-Australian.

The current blame game that is taking place between politicians is reprehensible, the Australian people need strong leaders who will stand up for the rights of all Australians.  We should also be helping India in their time of need, the situation in India is dire.  By helping other countries stamp out COVID-19 helps us also because it prevents mutant strains from taking hold which could then render current vaccines useless.

All that the Federal Government has done is ban travel from India with a meagre concession announcing Australia will send ventilators, masks and gloves. Breaches of the travel ban could lead to five years' imprisonment, a $66,000 fine or both.  Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says a travel ban preventing Australians returning from India is "drastic" but is "designed to keep Australians safe".  When do we get to choose which Australians we keep safe?

Australia desperately needs a Federal facility for quarantine so we can get Australians home as soon as possible.  COVID-19 is going to be with us for many years so we need to adapt and learn to live with it.  As the late economist Milton Friedman once said, “Only a crisis, actual or perceived, produces real change… When that crisis occurs the actions that are taken depend on the ideas lying around. Seemingly impossible ideas become possible.”

Why can’t we innovate and create a quarantine and research facility or refurbish an existing facility to become a world renowned facility?  There is already a skills shortage in Australia and as COVID 19 continues to wreak havoc across the globe Australia is in an enviable position to attract great talent – what an amazing opportunity.

The actions of certain premiers to continually place their citizens in lockdown for 1 or 2 cases is unsustainable!  When is the “cure” worse than the “cause”?  Anecdotally, I don’t know anyone who has had COVID-19 but I do know many people struggling with mental health issues and at least 3 people that have committed suicide in recent months.  I would really like to understand the statistics on increased mental health issues, suicides and domestic violence attributed to lockdowns.  I guess this is a long tail statistic but behindthe numbers are real people!

The fear mongering that is being perpetuated is not leadership it’s propaganda!  We must learn to live with COVID-19 without a knee jerk reaction of a lockdown every time we have a case of COVID-19.  We’re not “in this together” when the politicians still get paid while small business owners, hospitality and retail workers are struggling financially.  Nor are we “in this together” when we turn our backs on our fellow citizens!

I beg of you to stop the madness and insist that the Federal Government take control of quarantine with purpose built or refurbished facilities so we can get our fellow Australians home and prevent continual leaks from hotel quarantine.
