Federal Government support for international students and protecting Australia’s reputation as a first-choice destination for higher education.

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a devastating impact on international students living onshore in Australia.  Many international students have lost employment and are ineligible to receive any financial support from the government.  Many students are now reliant on food packages from the community and have no financial support to help pay for rent or University fees.

Many international students are not able to return to their home country, even if they wanted to, due to international travel restrictions in many countries and no commercial flights available in a number of countries

We are calling on the Australian Federal Government to provide some financial support for international students, not only to help them survive, but also to retain Australia’s reputation as a first-choice destination for international students to undertake higher education and assist with Australia’s post-pandemic economic recovery.  International students make up Australia’s third largest export and last financial year contributed $38 billion to the Australian economy.

we are asking the Federal Government to provide similar assistance to our international students:

1.       All international students should be eligible for rental assistance for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

2.       Cap International Students higher education fees to a similar amount paid by domestic students for the next 12 months.

3.       Allow International students to defer payment of higher education fees for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

4.       Online overseas study should be treated the same as studying onshore for relevant visa purposes.

5.       Ensure international students are included under any schemes to protect residential tenants from eviction due to financial stress as a result of COVID-19.

As is appropriate; international students who work in Australia, pay their tax, pay for their own medical expenses and work in many sectors where it is hard to find employees.  Making them essential to Australia’s economic prosperity.

New Zealand and Canada are providing support for international students, we call on the Australian Government to do the same.
