Abolishment of State and Territory Governments

We need to acknowledge that our state governments are not functioning as well as they should be. Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the system is not working — as we have seen in the examples of New South Wales and Victoria.

State-federal relations at the national cabinet are not cohesive concerning decision-making. There are major issues agreed upon, yet not all state governments are implementing the outlined changes. As a result, each state and territory government’s management of issues of national significance is inconsistent.

We need to abolish the state, territory and local governments in their current form, as the existing structure is outdated and colonial. What is required is a central government that takes care of all affairs. This abolishment of state and territory governments should be replaced with regional authorities governed by the Federal Government. These regional authorities would follow the current state borders and embrace local governments for individual areas within a region, ensuring that a central government provides funding and resources to local government entities.

Consider the mess we are in with the COVID road map. The states disagree, and one way out of this is to remove one layer of government so that we only have two levels, federal and local, rather than three (local, state, Commonwealth). This would offer a better response to our country’s difficulties. It may also help distribute goods and services in a better-designed system for the current needs of Australians.

The abolition of the present arrangement of state, territory and local governments has the potential to save billions of dollars and improve efficiency. Increasing resources and expanding local governments would thus be a far stronger alternative for delivering a meaningful and effective government.

Furthermore, a central government with regional authorities would provide much-needed consistency regarding our approaches to the social, cultural, economic, education, and health issues that the Australian people face daily.
