The volunteer service was designed to provide a fire fighting capability to small towns in the event of small fires. This allowed the towns to protect themselves without waiting for full time firefighters to come from larger cities.

These days, we deploy the RFS for long periods to fight larger fires, which is outside their remit.

It's time we stopped using volunteers and started a Firefighting Reserve service, just like military reserves. Funded by the Federal Government, "RFS" staff would be paid to attend training - just like military reserves.

If they are deployed to fight fires - taking them away from their usual employment - they would be brought into a "Full Time Service" model, just like the military reserves are when they deploy overseas.

It's unfair and archaic to expect these men and women to give up time with their families to train, and then leave their employment and families for weeks at a time to save our country with no compensation.

Creating a paid reserve capability also has the potential to grow the size of this force.
