Reform the Prison System
This petition had 91 supporters
The current prison system is ineffective in reducing crime and rehabilitating prisoners. Overcrowding is a major problem with many prisons being filled beyond capacity. A large number of inmates have been convicted of minor crimes and have received heavy sentences, for example, over three thousand inmates have received life sentences for nonviolent crimes, often as small as shoplifting or selling $10 worth of marijuana. Since the implementation of the War on Drugs over forty years ago, prison populations have increased by almost 600%. Rather than receiving proper treatment and rehabilitation, prisoners convicted of drug-related offenses are placed into overcrowded prisons with other prisoners convicted of much more violent offenses. The purpose of this petition is to urge the government to make necessary changes to the prison system in order to more effectively reduce crime, rehabilitate prisoners, and reduce repeat offenders.
