at Kingsley Pierson community school district, the students aren't given proper sex education. What the school teachers to freshman/seniors is abstinence. This technique has been proven not to work. Abstinence only until marriage Programs are proven to be ineffective and harmful for students. "while sexual abstinence can be a healthy choice for some adolescents, abstinence only until marriage programs are highly problematic" says Laura Lindberg, review coauthor and Guttmacher principal research scientist. "these programs withhold important sexual health knowledge and provide medically in accurate information that compromises young peoples healthy sexual development." In theory, abstinence is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs. However, many adolescents who intend to practice abstinence fail to actually do so, and they often fail to use condoms or other forms of contraception when they do have intercourse. Considerable scientific evidence accumulated over the past 20 years has found that abstinence only until marriage programs are not effective at preventing pregnancy or STIs, nor do they have a positive impact on age at first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners or other behaviors. Not only is sex education providing important information for growing adolescents, evidence -based sexual health education can improve academic success; prevent dating violence and bullying; help youth develop healthy relationships; delay sexual initiation: reduce unplanned pregnancy, HIV, and other STI's; reduce sexual health disparities among LGBTQ+ youth (Szydlowski, 2015). In conclusion, Kingsley-Pierson is behind on their teaching methods and allowing teens to miss out on very important information that could affect their lives. Mr. Mulder teaches freshman and seniors, one for each semester of the year. He insists on teaching Abstinence to the students, which we know is an ineffective and harmful teaching practice.
