We would like to express our opinion and show that we do NOT support Scott AFB opening the Patriot’s Landing Gate and Scott Elementary School Gate.
It has been relayed that the base will allow 24-hour free-flow of traffic for residents to the local community and the school. Patriot’s Landing residents would then use the Belleville Gate for base access.
The base has stated that the Belleville Gate will be manned 24 hours a day to minimize impact from this change. This does not minimize the impact on this community as hundreds of people have made the decision to live here based on having a CLOSED community that is not free-flowing of traffic or open to the greater community.
Further, the base has provided only a 20-day notice until this change takes place. This is not a sufficient amount of time and at the very least such a drastic change should take place over the course of a year so that people can make alternative plans if they no longer desire to live in this community.
The decision to make Patriot's Landing "open and free-flowing" comes with many concerns. For example, the safety of children and their playmates who use the playground, play outside and commute to school by foot or bike daily. Families have made the decision to live on base expecting privacy, easy base access, and safety. This includes the kids and family that use the youth center. There has been no word or mention of how the Youth Center and those who use it will be monitored or how they will be kept safe.
Families have made the decision to live in Patriot's Landing (and even renew their lease based on these circumstances) that they can commute to work and other locations by foot or bike without leaving base or having to go through another gate. This could be more difficult for families who are a single-car home, or people who rely commuting by foot.
This is not to mention how traffic in the area will be impacted and what safety precautions runners, walkers, and members alike will need to take now that they are doing so in a "free-flow" community. This not only impacts the Patriot's Landing community but this will also impact commuters who currently use the Bellville Gate as traffic will only increase.
We also have had no notice, mention, or discussion on how this impacts bus routes for the kids, school access, whether or not the public will have playground access, community house access (many members use the community house for reasons other than the pool), as well as overall neighborhood access. There has also been no mention on how this will impact the express and the exchange on base. It might be easier for families to go to a neighboring grocer rather than "sit" in traffic to get back on base.
