Teach philosophy instead of Shakespeare in English at school.
Shakespeare is an excellent example of literature greatness, however, is learning about his writing useful to us as students?
Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.
We as students would thrive upon knowledge about how we evolved, and the psychology behind human actions.
We know many great philosophers, such as Aristotle, Plato, Socrates and so on. However, more recent philosophers such as Yuval Noah Harari and Jordan B. Peterson have explained theories involving homo sapiens, and the human mind.
Shakespeare has many benefits, from a sense of literature, however, the language is outdated, and will rarely be used students, and future generations.
A survey, which was provided to over 2,800 people, suggested that over 80% of students would rather learn about philosophy rather than Shakespeare.
A change to philosophy would advance the way we think as humans, and allow for deeper conversations, and logical discussion. Philosophy can incline students to learn more about the human mind, which would benefit them in the study of biology.
To conclude. Shakespeare is influential, and teaches us about the literature of the past, however, philosophy will teach us about everything around us, and how we function, as people. Wouldn’t that be more exciting to learn?
