Why this petition matters

Started by Ariane Holton

Throughout the last decade, students have not only had to deal with keeping up their grades, but also dealing with mental health issues. One why high schoolers can deal with this is getting help from school social workers.

HELPS STUDENTS BECOME MORE SOCIAL

According to the School Social Worker Association of America, “School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals that can assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling/therapy.” With the help of school social workers, students can learn to be more open to others and learn new social skills that they could use in their careers and throughout the rest of their lives. According to the Hudson Valley Community College, mental health counseling can improve interpersonal and communication skills. Mental health counseling can teach students how to manage conflicts with their peers and it can also teach students how to interact, communicate, and participate better in group projects.

IT HELPS A STUDENTS BECOME MORE SUCCESSFUL IN SCHOOL

Instead of students always focusing on their mental issues, like anxiety and depression, students can focus more on their education. According to the American Psychiatric Association, mental health counseling can help students focus more on current problems and teach them how to solve them. This can help students focus more in class and put more interset into learning instead of their problems.

IT CAN HELP PREVENT SUICIDE

Mental health counseling has been proven to treat mental disorders, including trauma-related disorders, anxiety, and depression. All of which could impact a person greatly to commit suicide. According to Psychiatric Times, therapeutic interventions reduce suicide risks.
