School Shootings in the U.S
Hey, I'm Justin, and I'll be explaining why I believe school shootings are an issue in our modern society. My inspiration for this idea came from the incident March 4th in which Olathe East had a shooting that injured 3 individuals. This problem directly affects others, as it affects all of the U.S education system. From students to staff, as the constant worry of a shooting is terrifying mentally and economically. Additionally School shootings also hurt the reputation of our country as a whole. Through the Olathe East shooting on March 4th and the weapon found at our school this year on March 21st, it becomes apparent that shootings and the threat of them are a severe problem. As projected by fee.org, a news site, “US schools now spend an estimated $2.7 billion on security features, from automatically locking doors to video surveillance and facial recognition software.”. Furthermore our global reputation is poor, as the U.S is already behind in many areas, such as our healthcare ranking 11th, Social justice, minimum wage, and free higher education. For a global superpower we’re lacking, and the school shootings just add insult to injury as, CNN reports “The US has had 57 times as many school shootings as the other major industrialized nations combined”. The industrialized nations are made up of Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, and the UK. This number truly shows why the U.S is viewed in a negative light globally.
