A Fair Dress code

A Fair Dress code
Why this petition matters

Our school dress code has become arbitrary. Our dress code was already strict, with rules limiting what color shirts we can wear, but now they are even taking away our jeans furthermore limiting our clothing options. It’s true that our school has had dress code problem with skirt lengths in the past but now the dress code has been reinforced so that skirts must be Knee length. Why should our jeans be taken away as well. Pershing’s Shared Decision Making Committee voted in March to get rid of jeans and proposed that we wear khakis instead with no stated reasoning. Has there ever been a problem with jeans? Even if there was, it would be something minor like having ripped jeans, which would be a problem with the individual making bad decisions. Many people at school wear jeans as opposed to skirts or khakis, why should all of those people be punished for the bad choices of others. Instead of removing jeans completely, I propose we reinforce the dress code rules about jeans and make sure punishments are given to those who break the rules. Having the privilege to wear jeans is something that most students respect and take seriously. If problems with jeans were as sever as with skirts, I wouldn’t be making this petition, but they’re not, so why should our jeans be taken.
