Over the course of my freshman year at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, I have found that the fundamentals of the SVA Registrar and board regarding absences to be unjust and quite discriminative.
I, a commuter from Long Island, have been ill a number of times this year due to heavy flu season this past winter, as well a number of other serious health issues etc. Although each policy regarding absences varies from teacher to teacher, along with SVA's attendance policies, I have faced one or two in particular who have a strict "Excused Absence" policy if due to medical reasons.
Although many other students have been given excused absences for illness, I have not. And after numerous efforts to communicate and offer doctors notes etc, I have received no responses and or solutions. I have reason to believe that this could be discriminatory to those who commute etc because we cannot simply walk out of the dormitories and notify our teachers in person if we cannot participate in class due to illness.
This school has given me a place where I belong. A home. A place where I don't have to be afraid to be who I am, and show my true colors. But I believe that my health is crucial to my education and wellbeing, therefore I am more than a number. I am more than my tuition. I am a human being. And I deserve the right to a fair education without fear of penalization due to serious illness.
We all get sick. We all have issues. We are human.
Please sign this petition to change the attendance policies at SVA NYC to allow a certain number of absences due to sickness.
