School lunch in the U.S.

My name is Kristen Allred and I am a high school student teacher at an elementary school in North Carolina. Throughout my internship I have noticed the food that is being served to Elementary school kids as lunch. I was appalled to see that our kids were not being served near enough food to fill a belly. They are offered things that are nasty, under-cooked and poorly planned out. Today, one of my students had on their lunch tray: corn, Cole slaw, a cheese string, and a yogurt. How is this lunch? When our kids do not have enough lunch money they are denied food and sent on their way. Kids go to school to learn and grow and yet with an empty belly, are still expected to concentrate on their school work. Criminals in prison are guaranteed 3 meals a day for FREE. Why are criminals eating better than our school children? Something needs to be done! Our children should be provided with a hearty meal for lunch daily with very little to no charge and the criminals should be the ones who are forced to eat the bare minimum. I hope that you will support me in this because the growth and learning of our students should be one of our greatest concerns.
