chloe hurley started this petition to School leadership team

Hi, my name is chloe; I am a student at St Francis. I have decided to start this petition to abolish the anti-piercing as well as the anti-hair dye policies, and I need your help. Do we want to be known as a school as well as a community for having strict policies against self expression when our school motto is “be yourself and be that well” or do we want to represent our schools motto and be a welcoming community for those who express themselves in different ways? Think to yourself; do we want to be like every other private school and have such limits around self expression or do we want to be different? I say we stand up against these simple-minded rules and policies preventing us from expressing ourselves freely.

In regards to the uniform; I am not in any way, shape, or form making any attempts to change the uniform; I am just trying to change what we can wear with our uniform. As a school why are we being so discriminative against those with piercings and dyed hair? Why do we act as if these things are so unprofessional? WE ARE CHILDREN. We need to find who we are and how we like to express who we are; these policies are preventing us from our journey of self discovery through our appearance.

First of all, it states in our schools uniform policies booklet that we ‘recognise individuals skills and talents while appreciating their uniqueness” (St Francis de Sales College is a learning community that works together to build an environment in which faith is nurtured in a Catholic Christian tradition. It does this by recognising individuals’ skills and talents while appreciating and accepting their uniqueness.) I will now state the policies that need to change.

Hair In order to keep hair neat and tidy:  Hair is to be well-groomed and kept away from the face at all times.  Hair is to be tied back if collar-length or longer.  Hair ribbons are to be in College colours only (navy blue, bottle green, gold).  Hair style and colour should be appropriate for school and designed not to attract attention.
Students should be clean shaven at all times.
Clear or natural coloured nail polish is permitted to be worn to school, no other colours are permitted. French nails are not permitted.
No visible tattoos
Jewellery is not permitted with the College uniform. The only concessions are: Students are permitted to wear one sleeper or one small stud in each ear lobe and two clears anywhere on each ear. Students can wear small pearl earrings or small gemstones. No other facial piercings or clears will be permitted (including the nose, tongue, eyebrow and lip).

You may be thinking that the schools leadership team will just disregard this petition and ignore our fight against their discriminative policies; but that's where I come in; they may be stubborn but I can bet im 10x more stubborn; i refuse to stand around and let our school be a place of discrimination and no originality. It is truly disgusting that our school's leadership team thinks they can take away our human right of self expression.

And yes, if I am so against the school's policies I should just leave right? But I know for a fact that I am not the only student that disagrees with these policies; therefore I refuse to abandon those who are either too scared to speak up against these policies or those who cannot be bothered.

So please, for the sake of our community; sign this petition. Help fight against these policies.
