Cecily Burch started this petition to The School District of Monroe Board of Education

People of color are forced to deal with discrimination and racism every day, whether in the form of hate speech, microaggressions, racist "jokes," or violence. Changing this reality may be difficult, but it is certainly not impossible. One way to begin to dismantle the deep-set racism in our society is to begin in schools. Racism is learned, and that means that it can be unlearned. By teaching educators how to recognize and eliminate their own biases against people of color, as well as ensuring that there is a clear system to penalize racist or discriminatory behavior perpetrated by students or teachers, the School District of Monroe can be a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem. For a school district who prides themselves on having "long been considered one of the most innovative, forward-thinking school districts in Wisconsin," (according to the School District of Monroe website) it would be hypocrisy not to take the necessary steps to ensure that all students feel welcome, safe, and respected in every school in the district, regardless of their race or ethnicity. One of the steps the district can take is to host bias-training for staff and students. This training can be done in person or online, and it is a great first step towards attempting to eliminate racism and discrimination in Monroe schools. Another great step towards this goal is creating and adopting a more thorough policy on the punishment of perpetrators of racism and harassment in school. These simple steps can be the spark that ignites a culture of tolerance and acceptance in our community. Every student deserves a learning environment where they are safe from discrimination and hatred, and the School District of Monroe has not only the opportunity, but the obligation to provide that.
