The School District of Beloit in Beloit, Wisconsin made the right decision to move to distance learning for the first quarter, considering the current surge in cases in Wisconsin and Rock County. However, they are currently requiring teachers to come into school and facilitate distance learning from their empty classrooms.
Many teachers have children of their own who will be doing distance learning. By forcing them to return to their classrooms, they will have to seek out childcare, which is completely counterintuitive to the closing of physical schools. This will also incur a financial burden on incredibly underpaid teachers in this community.
Many teachers are considering leaving their teaching jobs, giving up their careers, job security, salaries, and benefits, because they are now forced to choose between their jobs and the health, safety, well-being, and learning of their children.
Respect and trust teachers to do their jobs at home. Teachers know how to multitask - they can get their kids on distance learning and facilitate their own classes. Teachers care about both their children and students - they can absolutely teach both from the safety of their own homes.
