Save Sundance Elementary School

Sundance is one of three elementary schools of choice within School District 61. It is a small school that has been a part of Victoria’s educational community since 1973.

Sundance has a philosophy of community engagement. Parents, teachers, staff, and children work together to build an inclusive learning environment. The school provides a model to British Columbia and all of Canada of personalized learning, differentiated instruction, and Universal Design for Learning, all of which is currently being endorsed by the BC Ministry of Education.

Larger schools offer bigger peer groups and more potential activities—an environment that many children thrive in. Sundance offers an intimate, inclusive approach that is equally essential for the success of many children. This is the basis of choice. Sundance provides a choice for parents whose children need a smaller-scale environment in order to learn, and for those who want their children to learn to be a part of an integrated community. Taking away Sundance takes away choice. It leaves a gap in educational offerings in Victoria that other schools can’t meet.

We understand the difficulties that the board is facing in managing its budget, and are willing to work together to find a positive solution that keeps Sundance open as a meaningful choice within the public school system. The time frame the School District has put forward does not allow for this. We feel we are being forced out of our school—the process has been too rushed, and there has not been enough time for consultation and problem solving.

The School District’s proposal deeply concerns the children, families, and staff at Sundance, as well as the broader community. Most people love their schools—no one wants to see theirs closed. But this closure is concerning on a deeper level. It is about closing more schools. It is about moving towards larger and larger schools for Victoria’s youngest citizens. It is about reducing choice within the school system, in a province whose Premier campaigned on increasing choice in schools and in a district whose trustees campaigned on a promise not to close schools. It should be concerning to everyone who believes that our education system should have a place for all children.

We ask you to remember your campaign promise to keep schools open and work with the Sundance community to protect the unique learning environment we have fostered for the past 41 years.
