People are much, much more than numbers and if we use numbers as a barrier to opportunity, many who have great talents to offer will never gain the chance to share them.

Just spoke with current seniors a week ago. I am disgusted by what I heard, the destruction of traditions, harm to sequences and academics, high turn over stressed out and burned out teachers, unhappy students who are fearful of speaking out. The thing that crushed me as an alumni was their regret at attending, and reports of being neglected in their college applications. They felt their peers and siblings in other schools got better attention, personalized care. It appears Dr. Mars hides in her office and is not engaged with the student body because they hate the changes she has wrought, and have outright booed her. Her leadership is in question. Her stewardship is in question. If it is true that she has empowered a small group of parents ti continue to push for changes that result in disenfranchising entire segments of the NYCDOE populations it is a problem. The elitism is a problem. The academic segregation and class segregation is a problem. Be sure that the first two result in racial segregation.

I graduated from the High School of Performing Arts (now LaGuardia) class of 1976. Its vibrant, creative culture, made up of students of exceptional artistic ability but perhaps differing academic ability, forever changed my life for the better. A school for the arts should value the arts above all.

I grew up in NYC and LaGuardia was was the school I was supposed to go to, we moved out of state before I started, but I can say -- I was a curious, talented, engaged kid, with poor math skills and a resistance to test taking, had I not had an artistic outlet I would have languished and been labeled a problem student, lazy, under-achiever etc. I was lucky I found teachers in the schools I ended up attending, who saw beyond my scores and grades and knew that my talent, passion, and intelligence needed to be found, not judged. I love this school, I find it heartbreaking it could ever deviate from its original mission.

I’m signing this because I’m an art volunteer and I want to make sure my mentee has a greater chance at getting into her dream school.

It’s really sad that Dr. Mars is continuing to take grades over audition. My daughter scored extremely high on her dance audition, had an 80 and above in her 4 core subjects and did not get admitted. The head of the dance department called me questioning if I applied right. She didn’t think it made sense my daughter was not accepted. She called us a second time asking us to appeal but we decided against it. The school isn’t what it use to be.

Потому что считаю это важным! Каждый ребенок имеет право на достойное образование, так давайте же все вместе дадим детям эту возможность?
