Academic counselors are critical part of the support system for students in our high schools. Currently, our schools have a small number of academic counselors ( the case load for counselors typically are over 600 students and in many cases closer to 800 plus in some schools). It is a matter of regret that the East Side Union district has proposed to put Counseling on the chopping block and plans to lay off another 13.5 Counselors district-wide, or approximately 1 per school site, regardless of school population.
“This means is there will be one less counselor to help our students with college and career planning, less help for high school course planning, fewer presentations, less help when they are struggling academically and less help with the college application process, etc., etc., ... the list is endless!”
Also on the agenda are to cut advisors, librarians, mental health counselors, parent liasons, and more. These areALL vital positions and programs in the district, and we know that providing a safe, happy, productive school environment for our students is a lot more than just academics.
As parents, students and members of the community, we are shocked and outraged since this will impact the experience of every family whose kids attend East Side Union high schools.
We strongly urge the board to reconsider this intention of cutting such essential support services for families as many of them have kids who will be first generation college entrants. Please consider the impact of your decision on the FUTURE of these kids.
