Imagine you’re a highschool student in the 1960’s, waking up at 8 in the morning and getting to school by 8:30. Now imagine you’re a highschool student in 2020, waking up at 6 or sometimes even 5 a.m just so you can get to school by 7. While this may not seem like such a horrible reality, waking up this early and having to go through six hours of just sitting around and typing away at a computer is the most boring thing that could easily lead students to grow sleepy.

Collegeexpress.com states that “A scary number of high school students barely reach the recommended number of hours of sleep each night, and 60%-70% of teens suffer from some form of sleep deprivation.” This is a huge problem in schools across the United States, as teenagers find themselves yawning in class every five seconds and struggling to focus because they’re too zeroed in on trying to keep their eyes open. On top of that, sitting in one position throughout the whole school day and consecutively working on assignment after assignment is bound to make students exhausted. Especially if, as soon as they reach home, more homework is the first thing they start on.

Chronic sleep loss is also a case that can create paths to higher rates of obesity, depression, and suicidal thoughts, as according to theatlantic.com. This information is becoming much more well-known from parents and students alike across the country, and is all the more reason why students should be able to take a break from the day and use it for a much-needed power nap.

A nap of 10-20 minutes (maybe even more!) from the six hours of a student’s school day would be highly beneficial to both the kids in school and the teachers alike. Scienceofpeople.com reminds us that the ideal length of a nap for someone who wants to wake up refreshed and with less fatigue is 20 minutes.

As a student myself, I have observed the way my fellow peers and friends are worn out and filled with constant tiredness. Having a period of time in the day where we can relax and reset ourselves would be very much welcomed.
