The multiple viruses have attacked our nation and we are once again forced to address the outbreak in our County and our school system.  Prince George’s County took an aggressive approach based on data and guidance from the health department.  Safety should always come first; however, there should also be some consideration for mental health as well.  Sports plays a key part in creating that balance for our kids.  To abruptly go to virtual learning with no regard for sports is tunnel vision especially when other jurisdictions have managed to maintain some sense of consistency and normalcy while keeping safety in the forefront.  Others jurisdictions have also continued to practice and play games so they are able to compete at a high level so why can’t Prince George’s County. This petition is to request winter sports activities continue during this virtual learning shutdown. In-person practices with guidance should be permitted and all games missed should be rescheduled.  Winter sports lost a season last year and we can’t afford to lose a second  year.  We’ve managed with accommodations for fall and spring sports and winter sports should not be an afterthought.  Granted, last year caught us by surprise and we should be better off because of it.  An alternative plan should already be in place to address these unexpected circumstances.  We request that our kids be allowed to have in-person practice immediately.
