Why this petition matters

“It’s not racist nor offensive to recognize the proud Native American history the Winnacunnet Warriors represent. I understand young people like to effect change, but changing a name of a mascot by circulating a petition is the easy way out. If the organizers of this movement want to address systemic racism, they need to get their hands dirty and work for it themselves, not call others racists for not agreeing with an opinion that is not based in fact or history and is actually based on pure ignorance of both.” -Alicia Preston, of the Class of 1992.

“I think assuming indigenous people are offended by the depiction of their people being used as a mascot is presumptuous."-Deb Picucci, of the Class of 1980 who is part Cherokee, and does not find the mascot offensive.

Replacing the mascot would waste money on replacing the gym floor, sports gear, uniforms, and any school pride clothes students have gotten wouldn’t matter because it is deemed racist according to those who support replacement.
