Trans student rights ASD started this petition to School Board

Transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming students have been forced into bathrooms that do not fit their gender identity. If we make the bathrooms in ASD gender neutral, we can prevent so much unnecessary gender dysphoria. This protects the trans students and gives them the right to use their preferred bathroom, no matter their gender assigned at birth.

Background: People are coming out as transgender more often than ever. Many of the people part of the trans community realize their gender when in their youth, some as young as elementary schoolers. This is completely healthy and normal to do. Others realize that they do not identity with a gender at this age. Again, healthy and normal.

So what's the issue with gendered bathrooms? If one is transgender, they may be afraid of going into their preferred bathroom. It could be for many reasons. Maybe they're not out yet, or maybe they're just scared. These feelings are completely valid to feel. Other students may not know which bathroom to use, or use a different one each time. This is also fine. They should use whichever they're comfortable with, because that's what matters.

Why make the bathrooms gender neutral here in Abington schools? Students who do not conform to a gender should not be told to use the boy's or girl's bathroom. This should be their choice in the first place. Anyways, the bathrooms only have one difference between them, besides their names. One bathroom has urinals and one doesn't. If we simply label a bathroom based on whether or not it has urinals, we can let people use whichever bathroom they prefer without putting a gender on it.

If the petition gets signed, maybe we can convince the school board into making these bathrooms gender neutral. I suggest they be sorted by having/not having urinals, which many gender neutral bathrooms do.

I'm hoping we can reach a goal of 100, preferably 500 by mid-August so that the district has the appropriate amount of time to make these changes before the school year starts. If done before the school year, the problem will not be as big starting in the 2021-2022 school year.

This may seem small, but it is very important that schools start to support their transgender/non-binary/gender nonconforming/other students. If abington does this, other schools might do the same. Additionally, this would mean that at least one school believes that trans issues are important in schools. So let's give trans students the right to use whichever bathroom they prefer!
