As of 2019, Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 47,000 people, according to the National Institute on Mental Health. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-24. These are the youth of America. These are children and young adults that don’t understand the science behind what they are feeling. Mental illness is surrounded with false information, prejudice, and even conspiracies in society. Some of the most common ideologies are that it simply does not exist or that it isn’t a real issue that requires treatment. Many children today are not put on the psychiatric medication needed or recommended by doctors because of the parents’ beliefs that have formed over a lifetime of miseducation. All of these misconceptions could easily be prevented early with a simple change in our education system. A course not only to expand the minds and tolerance of children but to also reform the beliefs parents and educators have developed over their life. The stigma against mental disorders and their treatments is dangerous. Especially when this stigma exists in a society riddled with these very illnesses...
