Kate Gardner started this petition to School Board and

This spring, the secondary school sent out surveys to the students asking their opinion of the last two years of block schedule - either A/B days or A/B quarters. Parents were never sent the survey or the survey results, but the school decided that from now on, the school would do A/B quarters similar to the 2020-2021 school year. The difference would be A/B semesters - meaning semester 1 would be semester "A." Students would take their semester classes like math, science, social studies, or ELA on either an A semester or a B semester. Meaning, they would get a year's worth of these topics delivered in a semester and then nothing until the next year.

Again, the secondary school never communicated this directly to parents, and parents were never given a say in our children's education. We found out as we were registering our children for next year.

There are several problems with this schedule that raises the alarm for us, the parents.

1. Students lose the continuity of having their core classes for one semester per year.

2. Music is the only class that is all year, making students lose out on opportunities to participate in our wide variety of electives.

3. Due to the large (anywhere from 3 months to 1 year) break between their core classes, many kids will slide and struggle. This will disproportionately impact students in higher/honors classes and students who struggle in specific courses. We know this is not the best practice for our students.

4. The argument to change this stems from "preparing students for semesters of college" however, not all students attend college, and the risk greatly outweighs the pro of college prep.

We want the school to communicate more effectively and timely with parents. We want an equal say in our children's education. And we want the block schedule to go back to the way it is intended, so all students have an equal opportunity to succeed in their classes, and music students have more opportunities to experience a variety of electives.
