Mason Brandt started this petition to School Board

As a trans student, I often find myself struggling with the use of my given name. Just like myself, many other students struggle with this same thing, so my hope is to remove the excessive use of given names in the school setting.

At my school, the staff likes to pride the school on its "inclusiveness" but unfortunately, they aren't great at truthfully practicing inclusiveness. In their attempt to make the school setting as inclusive as possible, they do ask that students all respect each other. One question I have for this is, how are students expected to respect one another, when not even the school itself does?

Someone on the school board reading this might think "A parent can sign for a students name to be changed on things such as Infinite Campus" but that is simply where another problem starts. Not every student has a supportive parent willing to sign for their child, and unless said child is at least 18, they can't do anything about it.

This then creates a divide between those fortunate enough to have supportive parents, and those who are not. It puts some students in a position above others, and that is not inclusivity.

Furthermore, as students-especially amidst this pandemic-we use google a lot more whether it be for assignments, or even simply being in class. The ability to change our name on our google account would mean a lot to us, it would give us sense of safety, comfortability, and inclusivity.

In conclusion, we the undersigned, are simply asking that district 112 -or any other district that this may reach- allow that trans and gender non-conforming students can change their names on our school google accounts.
