Robert Tanner started this petition to Schoharie Libary Board

We have lost confidence in the Board of the Schoharie Free Library, and demand that the Board leadership step down to make way for Board Members that understand the needs and wants of its patrons and can operate the Schoharie Free Library successfully within the Mohawk Valley Library System (MVLS).

On May 18th, the community voted to increase funding for the Library through a special ballot. The community voted with confidence because of the positive changes we had seen in the library through the leadership of Don LaPlant. On June 2nd, the Board of Directors terminated Don's employment. They have not been willing to explain the reason for the Director's termination publicly. They have fostered speculation about their actions in the community which has hurt the reputation of the previous Director, our community, and themselves.

This action and their subsequent behavior will limit our community’s ability to hire a new director that has the qualifications we need to have a successful library for our community.  The Board has made it clear that they do not respect the role of the Library Director or Library employees through the poor manner in which they handled their challenges with our most recent and past directors and staff.

The library is now operating with limited functionality and is not running in a manner comatable with the MVLS system. A key benefit of being part of MVLS is the ability to share materials easily through transfer, and Schoharie Free Library cannot participate in that benefit.

The Board of Directors has offered no plan to the community and its patrons for when the library will be functional. It appears no plan is in sight. This is highly irregular, and irresponsible.

It is clear that the termination of the Director was made with no regard to the consequences of the Board’s actions, only hurting the community and Library patrons. This is an unacceptable approach to running any resource for the community mostly paid for with our tax funding.

Lastly, our Library Board is a "Perpetual Board", meaning that the current board decides who becomes a board member. The community and the library patrons have no say in these decisions. Unless we make a change, we will continue to see mismanagement of the Schoharie Free Library.

Library Board members also have a 5- year term.  This term limit needs to be reduced so the Schoharie Free Library can benefit from fresh ideas, and ineffective board members do not negatively impact the services offered by the library.

This is why we have lost confidence in the Board of Directors, and why we demand that the Schoharie Free Library Board of Directors Leadership must step down.
