We, the undersigned, hereby object to and call on the Scenic Rim Regional Council to immediately abandon all proposed plans to spend our rates, or borrowings, on upgrading our traditional and much loved Main Street and village centre into an impractical, flashy, tourist facility. Particularly those plans proposed under the umbrella of the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages ~ Village Green Project.
The basis of my objection is that, in my opinion, such planned changes to Main Street, North Tamborine will;
Detract from the NATURAL BEAUTY an ambience if the environmentally sensitive Mountain and it's resident wildlife.
Disrespect the local history and the many generations of local community involvement, and their contributions.
Interfere with the local traffic and supply of essential services to the community by turning our single-lane service road into a shared zone.
Disrupt struggling local business with unnecessary road works.
Remove essential customer car-parking spaces to make room for tourist picnic benches.
Ignore the more realistic need of providing toilets and water to sustain this increase in people traffic.
Make a mockery of the concept of genuine "public consultation".
Be an irresponsible use of ratepayers' money, or borrowings, that is needed elsewhere in our community.
Be the antithesis to that which attracts toirists to Tamborine Mountain.
We require the money, now estimated to be $1.3 million, be re-directed elsewhere to benefit our local community.
The SRRC Mayor, Greg Christensen, has made plans to proceed with major earth works on our Main St Common Reserve, Tamborine Mt. Regardless of over 450 petitioners calling on him to cancel this.
This work is intended to be 'Transitional', altering our community from natural, early Australian character to contemporary design with modern structures and abstract sculptures.
Our Main Street is one of the few remaining examples of early Australian settlement that has evolved without need for change.
It retains its original character and is an example of early Australian architecture with many original buildings remaining.
The widened streets and centre reserve was necessary for bullock wagons to turn when transporting logs. This Common area has been part of our culture and social interaction for more than a Century.
Our Community has survived into the 21st Century, by being independent and self-sufficient, without town water, sewerage, public transport, minimal street lighting and footpaths.
The Tamborine Mt Road that connects to Main St is Heritage Listed as one of the first Council constructed roads outside of Brisbane.
A large stand of remnant rainforest, purchased by local community group for the Rainforest Trust, occupies one side of the entrance to Main Street.
A timber slab, crafted by locals and maintained by volunteers, is the formal road sign at the entrance to Main Street.
Ancient Black Butts remain in the middle of Main Street, having survived the early timber getters.
This 'transitional' work does not include an Arborist to protect these trees.
We love our town the way it is. Nothing can improve on the natural beauty nor replace our Civic Pride.
Certainly not an ambitious politician who is not a local.
All we want is to be allowed to retain our character and local culture.
We want to stop this irreversible earth work, pending an application for Heritage Protection, which has been submitted.
Our Aussie culture is too rapidly disappearing. Please help us make a stand.
