Scarborough Borough Council is considering proposals by Sustrans for them to take over management of The Cinder Track. Sustrans’ proposals include intent to increase the width of the path to, where possible, a minimum of 3m, with a 1m tree and shrub free verge on either side. This will have a negative impact on a diversity of local wildlife as the trees and verges are a habitat for badgers, birds, insects and wildflowers. It will also cause irreversible harm to an area of outstanding natural beauty, currently a varied, tranquil, meandering country bridleway with stunning views and an unparalleled sense of wilderness and remoteness. A further proposal is that the widened track will be comprised of a hard sealed surface, with asphalt or bitumen-macadam as the preferred materials. Sustrans, who are predominantly a cycling organisation, also intend to promote the path to commuter cyclists. The width and surface of the track will attract road bikes and cyclists who wish to speed, and this has serious safety implications for current users, who include ramblers, families, leisure cyclists, horse riders and dog walkers. There have been a number of resulting incidents at existing Sustrans routes, which have been rendered dangerous for other users. These, and other issues, including the probable negative impact on local economy and regarding the long-term financing of future maintenance are addressed in more detail in a‘Response to Proposals’ document attached to the petition Robin Hood's Bay area, as are copies of articles reporting problems with speeding cyclists at existing Sustrans schemes. There is no argument that maintenance of drainage and management of other aspects of the Cinder Track have been badly neglected in recent years but the petition calls on Scarborough Borough Council to now rectify this and to restore and maintain the existing path for the benefit of all.
