Why this petition matters

We are proposing that, for our 2020 graduation, we are offered a venue off campus. Our current venue is the Queen's Building on campus in Mile End, a building that we walk past several times a day and have done so for the past 3 years or more, meaning the occasion will not feel special or be something that we look forward to. In addition to this, it is a place that we associate with exams, open days, enrolment and other menial or administrative activities. This venue will reflect neither the grandeur of the occasion or the effort that other universities offer their graduating classes with off campus venues, often in a landmark location. Campus is located in an area with limited opportunities for accommodation, parking, dining, entertainment and shopping. It is unlikely that many family and friends would travel far to attend the event, and considering the diversity of our student body and the high proportion of international students, this would be a huge detriment to the ceremony. As an event which we will be paying for regardless of venue, we would hope for something more than this.

There are many beautiful venues in Central London that neighbouring universities consistently use for graduation ceremonies. Some examples would be Central Hall in Westminster, Royal Festival Hall in Southbank and the Barbican Centre, although other suggestions are welcome. Photo opportunities, amenities, convenience for guests and the overall sense of occasion and our memories of the day will be greatly improved by a venue off campus in a memorable location.

After 3 years of hard work, we believe that our university should offer us a more special occasion, to the same level that London universities of a similar distinction offer their students. It should be a culmination of everything we've worked for and motivation for us to get through the last few months, not something that we dread having to finance for little reward.

Thank you for signing this petition and we would appreciate it if you could share it with your peers in hopes that it could make a difference, both to this year and future years.
