Why this petition matters
Us students at Sayville High School are beyond frustrated. This year, as well as last school year, we've had numerous events and school traditions taken away from us due to COVID-19. In no way, shape, or form, are us students underestimating the effects this virus can have on individuals and their families. The student body as a whole feels as if we are being let down, and more could be done to ensure that students are getting the direct education they need to succeed. It feels as if the constantly changing plans as school progresses are not benefiting the students. It has already been difficult enough for students and staff to adapt to these new, unfamiliar changes, and constantly changing the plan is not making it any better.
A new adjustment has just been made to the Wednesday schedule, which has left many students conflicted and overwhelmed. Lots of students have jobs which may start around 2:30. How are students supposed to commit to these jobs that help them grow and mature if their school day does not end until 2:30? Students feel looked over in this situation, and feel as if their education could be significantly impacted by this change. We believe it would be more effective to have 9 straight periods on Wednesday's, as we have been doing for the first month of the school year.
Being on our computers, and stuck inside our houses is not healthy for students. In health class we learn that over 60 minutes a day of screen time is unhealthy, and now the same school who taught us how unhealthy this is, is making us do it for 6 hours a day. Students also have expressed multiple concerns that the plans being made are only taking us backwards, and nothing is being done to ensure that the school year will progress. There have been multiple other plans being made in school districts across Suffolk County that are easing students into going back 5 days a week. Students feel like this isn't being considered for our school district in Sayville.
