Statewide assessment testing during a humanity killing worldwide pandemic? Not only putting children, parents, guardians, teachers, and workers at a health risk. But also testing students based on an online learning disadvantage. We as students are aggravated, we are stressed, and we are overwhelmed. Is adding on a Statewide testing ritual on to the burning flame of this school year a wise decision?

Has the Florida Department of Education stopped to think about mentally and physically challenged students? Autism? ADHD? Dyslexia? Blindness? Deafness? These brave students encounter obstacles in everyday ordinary events and tasks we preform mindlessly. Now their obstacles have risen from the size of hills to the size of mountains and their worries have grown from pond ripples to tsunami waves. We certainly cannot ignore their silent cries for help. Some mentally and physically challenged children have difficulty dealing with situations when their world is turned more upside down then it already is. Students who deal with events in this way will be very negatively impacted if experience issues preforming the test or even learning to know what score they have received. These children are trying to overcome these current challenges to learn under today’s circumstances. But now are expected to take a Statewide assessment that will harass and mock their school record. This decision is unacceptable for it will severely impact the lives of many, not just, but certainly majorly students.

During a worldwide pandemic that has infected over 114,000,000 people in counting it is not responsible to test students who are already dealing with stress and depression. COVID-19 has brought unordinary factors into our lives including social isolation, uncertainty, motivation loss, online schooling, etc. The covid-19 outbreak has brought upon everyone a crack in stability and has given children and adolescents a hard shake in their mental health. Our lives have turned against us and trapped us on the other side of a locked door exposed and expected to make our way through a maze of problems, we have learned to recognize and opened ourselves to be stuck in the games of the maze. Certain children are suffering with their own thoughts, drowning in an underwater black hole. Covid-19 along with quarantine has stripped us away from a reality into another we are still and barely to comprehend.

We are being tested as if we have been learning in a regular school year. However, there is nothing regular about our learning experience this year. And these learning conditions are something that have been accumulating since last school year. Take into consideration that this years FSA testing will taint and leave a stain in all our school records is unfair. We have all been stripped away from normal circumstances in a classroom due to COVID-19 and have all taken a hit in learning environment changes. Students not having an FSA this year is more reasonable then going through with this testing. The FSA should be a reflection of a regular learning experience. The 2021 FSA will not project the learning growth of students due to the lack of ordinary learning experiences being experienced. The meaning behind FSA testing is to measure and examine student’s high order thinking skills and curriculum levels. This reasoning makes all the sense of the world under normal life circumstances. But as much as we wish it was, we are not in an ordinary time.

As students we have been taught about wondrous individuals who made their voices heard loud and clear for what they believed in. We are the new generation, and this is what we believe in. We are children and have a right to be heard. There is always an option, there is always something that can be done for the greater good. And in this case canceling the FSA for this year is the right thing to do.
