On March 14th, 2019, Starbucks stated via Twitter that there are currently no Michael Jackson songs listed on the official Starbucks Spotify playlist. This was in response to a customer complaining about hearing a Michael Jackson song at one of their locations. On June 14th, 2005, Michael Jackson was found not guilty of the molestation charges that were laid against him. The fact that Starbuck's has decided to remove Michael Jackson's music from their playlists simply because of allegations made against him reminds us that racism is still alive and well at Starbucks. Many white musicians such as Elvis, David Bowie, Gene Simmons, Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys), Ozzy Osbourne & Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), just to name a few have been accused of rape. If Starbucks as a company is not racist, then why is a rape accusation enough to have a black man's music removed from it's playlist but not enough to have a white man's music removed? Many of the white artists who have been mentioned have publicly admitted to raping children. This is in stark contrast to Michael Jackson as he had always maintained that he was innocent. It is clear that Starbucks has one set of standards for White people and another set of standards for Black people which is racist. We demand that Michael's music gets added back to the official playlist and we also demand that an apology be made to his family and fans for unjustly targeting Michael Jackson’s legacy as the greatest singer & entertainer of all time simply because of his race.
