Why this petition matters

As per the recent San Jose Council meeting on 06/21/2022, Quick Build housing plan was proposed to address the homelessness situation in San Jose. Council Member David Cohen proposed the site on King Road (between Penitencia Creek and Sofi Berryessa apartments) as an alternative site in District 4.

Details can be found on Slide 11 at - https://sanjose.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=11002161&GUID=981792D1-7B75-40E1-94C5-09368689D07B

While the residents in this area are sympathetic to homeless residents, they do oppose the selection of this particular site on King road for below reasons -

1.The Mabury road Quick Build home site is less than a mile away from this area.  This area already has 2 apartment communities dedicated for affordable / low income housing. It seems that the District 4 area around King Road has already done its fair share of duties towards housing for the less privileged. Adding another site in this area is completely unfair towards residents in this area. Like residents of other locations, we are equally concerned about the safety of our homes and our families.

Moreover, Councilman David Cohen's push to relocate the tiny home site to King road from other locations seems like an act of picking favorites. The city and district needs to do the right thing by sharing the responsibilities to the underserved equally by all parts of the city.

2. This neighborhood lacks parks, public play areas for kids or other avenues for recreational activities (e.g. basketball court / tennis court etc). The residents would really prefer the City to utilize the King Road location to address those needs as it’s next to a trail and this would greatly benefit residents of this area (which houses a plenty of low income families).

3. This is a very small site which can only provide 30 homes. The extremely low yield of quick build homes at this location makes this site an impractical choice (compared to other bigger sites which can accommodate 3-4 times more homes).

4. There are no grocery stores / Free Food services near to this location.
